History
For over ten years, the Doughertys were members of the LIONS club in the Monterey area, and through LIONS became volunteers for Canine Companions for Independence (C.C.I.). C.C.I. raises and trains dogs for people with special needs, and its main headquarters is in Santa Rosa, CA, although it has many locations throughout the U.S. and many volunteers. The dog you see in the Dougherty TV commercial was Lorraine. As Lorraine’s caretakers, the Doughertys included Lorraine in their lives, loved her and of course were there to assist in her whelping and nurturing of her litters during the first eight weeks of life.
Her puppies were transferred to C.C.I in Santa Rosa, to go on to other volunteers, who raised and trained them to become service dogs. Lorraine was with the Doughertys for eight years. Before Lorraine, the Doughertys were stewards to “J.C.”, whose puppies also were trained to become service dogs. Both dogs have passed away. Both dogs acted as receptionists at the Dougherty Law Office and both are missed and fondly remembered. They were a blessing to have.
Currently, the two dogs you may meet when you come into the office are Misty and Katy. Misty is the mix-breed, black dog, and Katy is a female Golden retriever, about seven years old. The dogs were not part of C.C.I., but both needed homes and so were adopted by the Doughertys.
